It's important that your brass hinges stay shiny and clean, but over time they can get some dirt or tarnish. The easiest way is to scrub them with soap and water. If this does not work, you can easily clean them with a variety of commercial and home-made cleaning products. Tomato paste, vinegar, baking soda, yoghurt and lemons may be useful in cleaning brass hinges.
Determine if you have a brass metal. There are two types of brass hinges: solid brass hinges and brass-plated steel, zinc or cast iron hinges. Place a magnet next to the brass hinge you want to clean. If it sticks, you know it's not made of solid brass.
If the brass hinge you are interested in is made of zinc, cast iron or steel, clean it very carefully, otherwise the brass coating will come loose.
Wipe the brass hinge with soapy water. Mix hot water with a few drops of liquid soap. It is not necessary to measure the amount of soap or water - just take the solution. Dip a warm sponge or cloth in the water and wipe off the hinge.
Once you have thoroughly worked through the device, dip an old toothbrush into the water and clean any gaps or hard-to-reach places that you could not wipe off when you first cleaned it.
Use ammonia on unpainted brass sheet. If your brass-coated hinges are unpainted, you can wipe the hinge with an old toothbrush or a rag soaked in ammonia if soapy water is not enough. Rinse the hinges in your sink under fast-running water. Dry with a clean, soft cloth.
Do not use this method if your hinges are painted, otherwise the coating will be damaged.
To determine if your brass-coated hinges are painted, perform a visual inspection. The varnish forms a thin, clear envelope over the brass-coated hinge.
Brass plate is almost always painted.
Use a commercially available cleaning agent. A variety of commercial cleaning products can help you with the cleaning of brass. While the specific instructions for these products vary by manufacturer, spray the product on the brass hinge and then wipe it with a clean cloth.
Popular brass cleaning products include Wright Premium and Brasso Multipurpose Polish premium cleaners.
Test the cleaning product on an inconspicuous part of the hinge before applying it to the whole. If the detergent causes the brass plate to peel off, stop using the product and try another one.
